How healthy is your hedge?

Pick the function that matters most. Different purposes target different porosity bands; the result adapts to your answer. Not sure? Pick “General health” - it’s the most common starting point.

Approximate is fine. Most UK farm hedgerows sit between 1.5 m and 4 m. (1.5 m is roughly chest-height; 3 m is roughly the height of a single-storey house gutter.)

Width sets airflow residence time, which drives drift capture, wind shelter, and basal habitat. (1 m is roughly an arm-span; 2 m is roughly two arm-spans.)

The location of gaps changes which functions are affected. Pick the closest match.

Pick the most recent significant event. The hedge’s current state is largely determined by what was last done to it.

Affects BNG condition class directly. Mixed-native hedges score higher on biodiversity.

Where the hedge sits in the landscape. Determines whether it’s controlling water runoff, sheltering livestock, or something else. Flat ground? Pick “Perimeter” or “Internal”.
